What are Video Glasses?

Video glasses, also known as head-mounted displays (HMDs), personal media viewers, or simply video eyewear, allow the wearer to experience the illusion of watching a huge movie screen from the distance of a few feet away – yet in a device that is light and portable and fits around the eyes.  Understandably, video glasses have been seen as having huge attraction to commuters, long distance travellers, students away from home, or many others who need to be entertained in a way that does not annoy others.  Video glasses not only enable the wearer to watch movies in privacy but also to play video games.  Video glasses are also the perfect medium for viewing 3D films and playing 3D games – not only because glasses are needed anyway to experience 3D, but also because they enable the user to enjoy the full possibilities of total immersion and virtual reality that 3D can bring.

Despite their obvious attractions, until recently video glasses were not of sufficient quality to break into the consumer market.  This has changed dramatically with the introduction of the Vuzix iWear Wrap range.  So how do these video glasses work?

How Stuff Works has a handy guide to understanding the technology behind video glasses.

Vuzix Wrap 280 Widescreen iWear

Vuzix Wrap 280 Widescreen iWear - £179.99

vuzix-wrap-280-widescreenThe Vuzix Wrap 280 Widescreen iWear is equivalent to a 51″ screen viewed from ten feet.  It weighs less than three ounces and like all of the Vuzix iWear range, is the  ultimate in style and technology for video glasses.

The specs come with noise-isolating stereo earbuds and a chunky, wired pocket remote control. You can adjust the way they sit on your face (they’ll even fit over prescription glasses, although it’s a tight squeeze) and independently focus each lens. The many picture adjustments include brightness, contrast, colour and aspect ratio, and Vuzix says the automatic 3-D mode recognises a 3-D video source and displays it three-dimensionally.

So, is it time to flash your credit card for the geek in your life? Perhaps so. The Vuzix specs were fairly easy to set up: within minutes we were watching a clip from the recent Star Trek film, played on an iPhone. The VGA video resolution, split across the two 384 x 240-pixel LCDs, is modest yet perfectly watchable — certainly compared with the 3in screen of most smartphones — and an impressive six hours of play is promised from two AA batteries.
